The Enemy Within

Colmfarhe Surprise
An introductory story to Warhammer 3e

Without wishing to sound to much of a cliche…

You checked the notice boards around the Plenzerplatz, jobs as farmhands and cattle drovers didn’t appeal neither did looking for a missing puppy or working at one of the stinking tanneries. But then you found this…

‘Hardy fellows wanted for a collection & delivery! Handsome pay of 125 shillings, plus reasonable expenses and bonus of up to 25 shillings for early delivery. May involve danger, absolute discretion required! Ask for Herr Schweinlugner at the Journeys End Inn. No time wasters.’

After a stroll across the cobolds of he Plenzerplatz, here you are in the most respectable inn in Averheim, on a grey and damp Wellentag morning, in the month of Brauzeit (early autumn). With Ranalds blessing you might be the first one here…

Damn there are already a few other in the darkened room, sitting on stools and standing in corners all looking towards the window, where stands a gentleman Herr Hans Schweinlugner who tells the following story…

“Thank you all for coming so promptly, I thought I would have to wait much longer to assemble such a capable looking group. My name is Hans Schweinlugner, I was a very successful apothecary in the village of Colmfarhe until three months ago…” he falls silent, momentarily a fearful expression passes over his face.

“Many of you will have heard of what happened at Colmfahre, my beloved home, the beastmen led by the one who is commonly known asBloodhoof raised every building in their savage bloodlust. Our few guards never stood a chance, the brave souls did however give the rest of us time to escape, raising the alarm.

“I grabbed a few possessions my sword and pistol and some money and fled, as I left the house I faced Bloodhoof, he stood a full foot over me, with menacing eyes and fearsome physique. He howled and bellowed at me, fear froze me to the spot, he stepped forward surely I would die, I expected nothing less.

“The other beastmen in-advertantly saved me, they were all pulling down buildings and setting fire to dwellings, my home and business was no exception, and just as Bloodhoof was about to strike me down the front wall collapsed and struck Bloodhoof he swung his mighty axe at me, his blow landed but rather than kill me his blow struck my leg, a wound from which I still haven’t fully recovered. As I ran I saw Bloodhoof scrambling out of the rubble howling in rage that I had escaped him.

“I fled with the few others who were lucky enough to escape, only a handful of us made it to Wuppertal as the beastmen hunted us like wild animals through the night. I made my way to Averheim hoping to get help from a old friend to set me back up in business as an apothecary, however he is away on some expedition to the southlands.

“Until his arrival I have no means of supporting myself or paying for the education of my two boys who are at college in Altdorf and Middenheim. To set up a proper lab will cost Hundreds of crowns a figure which I don’t have, well not presently…

“This is where you come in…” he looks you all over slowly. “As i said I ran a successful business in Colmfahre, I had a comfortable living and was able to send my boys for a good educaation, other than the death of my wife three years ago I had little to complain about, Sigmar be praised! However in my rush to leave on the night of Bloodhoof’s attack I never had time to collect the strongbox in which I stored the valuable ingredients for my business.” He pulls out a key and says "This is the key to that box, the contents are rare ingredients from across the known world, they are worth a goodly sum to any who know what to do with them! Retrieve this box for me and I’ll reward you as described in my notice with a bonus for prompt delivery! Sigmar only know what will become of me and my boys if you don’t help…’ He turns away to the window, struggling to control his emotions, after a few moments he turns back "The box is hidden behind a loose block at the base of the chimney stack of my home, which is next to the temple of Sigmar north of the village square. PLease find that box, my future and that of my family depends on it!

“What say you? Will you help a gentleman in need?” He looks imploringly at you all…
